(End of Semester) Blogging and the Writing/Righting We Do
Relief, joy and melancholy abound as today is the last day of classes. Perhaps because I was only teaching fourth year courses this semester, I'm feeling a bit of finitude. Academically, as I stare at my wall calendar and its highlighted blocks of upcoming conferences, I am glad for the "break" from my teaching (and perplexed by the "freedom" not teaching gives when my job is (mostly) to teach!?!). Professionally, I am excited for our soon-to-be graduates, most of whom, from our program, already have signed teaching contracts in their pockets -- Félicitations! Personally, I laugh to myself and at myself as I realize my own predictability -- 16 years on, the first day of school and the last day of school are (for me) perplexing sorts of days. And this year, perhaps especially so, because I've just finished my last PhD class -- still a long way to go, but this seems a milestone just the same. As my students shared their "l'école est finie" joy with one another today, I confess to wearing a little smile all of my own.
In Favor of Thinking's entry from last week on her first "blog anniversary" and the "tidal flows that govern the blog soup" rather sums it up: as she has eloquently observed, blogging is about writing. And that's plenty fuel enough for me on an end of semester day, which is always already a beginning, n'est-ce pas? L:)
