In/becoming/conclusive at AQM

Just spent a long weekend in Edmonton at the 6th Annual Advances in Qualitative Methods Conference. Highlights of the week's end were Jacqui Gingras, a poet-researcher of multiple subjectivities from Vancouver whose work with song lyrics with/in qualitative research I find inspiring; Dr. Delores van der Wey & Pamela Ponic's paper "Walking the Walk" on emergent research design and their emphasis on deliberate research relationships; and Dr. Arthur Frank's keynote address in which he used interpretations of Bakhtin to underscore the partiality of research and the ethical demands of "unfinalizability"; and possible impossible Derridian discussions with Dr. Serge F. Hein of Virginia Tech.

A journal full of notes and eight hours of prairie driving later, I am left with a renewed optimism in the possibilities of re:search... what it claims (and especially what it cannot), what it holds (and what falls away), and most of all (for now), what working towards finalization that isn't - or, put another way - what always (re)searching might make possible. L:)

in/becoming/conclusive ... "did you understand what that presentation was about?" a new friend asked me. "well, from my perspective (it is always from my perspective) they were exploring their multiple readings/listenings of King's book (literally) and also of their relationship (figuratively)." "oh," she responded, unconvinced. "and there was also a dramatic hint of ambiguousness nestled in among the text. i find something politically irreverent in hearing you ask the question 'what was that about?' because our lives are like that - and for those two women to convey/invoke the spirit of that question for you reminds me of their courage and genius/madness." "oh, I see."

did she?

Do we?

Thank you Jacqui for your commitment to making visible - it is so useful when our lives are like that.
